The Horned Toad Prince

 

The Horned Prince Toad is a modern fairy tale. It includes magical characters and events which take place in the present. Reba Jo makes a promise to a horned toad that saves her at the riverbed. Once she´s safe at home, she doesn´t want to keep her promise. Has this ever happened to you?

This week the students will be working on a new story, Grandfather’s Journey, by Allen Say. This historical fiction story takes place in the past and could include real people. Grandfather leaves Japan as a young man and goes to live for a while in California. He goes back to Japan to marry his girlfriend and takes her to the USA. What happens next? Where does Grandfather end up?

Lewis and Clark and Me

On Monday, August 25th the students will start a new story, Lewis and Clark and Me, by Laurie Myers. This story is historical fantasy; it combines historic events that really happened and fantastic ones that could not possibly happen. The narrator is a dog, “Me”. It hears, feels, and knows what is going on at the pier where it was sold and joins Lewis and Clark on an expedition.

Spelling: long A and long I: sigh, right, weigh, eight, detail, height, spray braid, bait, grain, slight, thigh, tight, raisin, trait, highway, frighten, dismay, freight, and sleigh.
